Looking At : Week Ending Jan 19, 2014

During the past week we've discussed a number of great links; on Google+, Twitter, the 'Paper' and so on. Here are a few of my favourites.

  • The Use of Robotics in Physical Therapy :
Researchers at ETH Zurich, a technical university in Switzerland, have been testing a specialized robot, the ARMin, against conventional therapy with therapists for stroke rehab. The robot is able to help move a patient's arm in a variety of ways along with visualized exercises displayed on a computer monitor. This provides precise training and can help build muscle memory.

Very interesting idea. Could devices such as this play a significant role in other areas of physical therapy?

  • A Fitness Tracker That Actually Works Out What You're Doing, and can Learn New Exercises : Say hello to the Atlas.

  • LynxFit - A Fitness Companion for Google Glass : Another combination we've talked about a number of times (particularly in the Future of Fitness Gymchat ) - Google Glass and fitness . Good stuff.

  • Wristworn Pulse Oximeter, Ambulatory Heart and Blood Pressure Monitors : An area with huge potential - for all kinds of health & fitness uses (sports, workout clothing, medical research etc). Wearable monitors.

  • Google's Smart Contact Lenses : Fantastic - sensors embedded in contact lenses. Incredibly powerful idea.

We also talked about The link between sleep and riding a bicycle to work, open source wearables and a whole lot more. Keep up with the world of Health & Fitness in the Straight to the Bar Community on Google+.
